Past sessions from 2001–2002 are listed below:
November 2002
Preliminary lineup, subject to change:
- Accessibility and Section 508
-
Few laws have caused as much confusion among web designers as Section 508, which requires many sites to accommodate people with disabilities and spells out what “accessible” means. Many designers and builders wrongly conclude that accessible design means unattractive, “low-end” design. But images, table layouts, style sheets, JavaScript, and other staples of contemporary web design are perfectly compatible with 508 compliance. In this session, Zeldman will examine what 508 compliance means to working designers and developers, and show how you can use online tools and a bit of judgement to make your sites comply beautifully.
- 18 November
- 10:15–11:15 am
- Designing & Building With Web Standards
- The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and other standards bodies have established technologies for web-based content. These “web standards” are designed to deliver the greatest benefits to the greatest number of web users while ensuring the long-term viability of web documents.
- Designing and building with web standards simplifies production and lowers its cost, while delivering sites that are accessible to more people and more types of Internet devices. Happy Cog founder Jeffrey Zeldman will discuss the current state of standards and share techniques that ensure your sites look and function as intended.
- 19 November
- 10:15–11:15 am
- From HTML to XHTML
- XHTML is the “XML for the rest of us” and the current standard for web page markup. Converting to XHTML is easy, and provides benefits including increased interoperability with XML in databases, improved accessibility, and cleaner, more logical markup. Learn the easy rules of XHTML, tools that can help, and problems that may crop up when you convert.
- 19 November
- 2–3 pm
- Deconstructing ... You!
- Panel with Kelly Goto and Jim Heid
- 21 November
- 4:30–5:30 pm
- Featured Guest, with Eric Meyer
- The Millennium Broadway (off Times Square)
- Meet the Makers host Brian Alvey will interview featured guests Eric Meyer of Netscape and Jeffrey Zeldman of Happy Cog on the subject of web standards. Additional featured guests include Hillman Curtis and the architects behind Zagat.com and Excite.com. Attendance is free to web professionals who request VIP tickets (first come, first served). Zeldman sits on the Advisory Board of Meet the Makers and finds it quite comfortable.

- Keynote: Forward Compatibility — Design for the Future With Standards Now
- 10 September, 9 am
- No more Netscape-only versions. No more IE-only versions. No more WAP versions. No more plain text or “printer-friendly” versions. The long-delayed promise of Web standards—“one document fits all”—is finally coming true. Jeffrey Zeldman of The Web Standards Project, zeldman.com, and A List Apart, will show you how to streamline web development and substantially lower its cost by seizing the power of cross-platform, cross-browser standards to create dynamic, accessible sites that reach more users than ever before.
- Accessibility for Designers
- 10 September, 10: 15 am
- See writeup below. This lecture replaces one that was previously scheduled. The Builder conference site may not yet reflect these changes.
- Advanced CSS: Designing With Style
- 10 September, 4 pm
- CSS is the web’s standard design and layout language. Attend this session for expert tips that will push you to do graphic menu bars (complete with rollovers) that contain no graphics and use no JavaScript. You’ll learn how to make text that’s easy to read and can be resized in any browser yet still drips with style, branding and aesthetics; and you’ll see how to make “printer-friendly” versions of your site that generate themselves on the fly, saving hours of tedious production work.
- Web Deconstruction: Learning From the Best and Worst of Attendees’ Own Sites
- 9 September, 8 pm
- Panelists rag on submitted sites to the merriment of all.
